St. Andrew’s United Church

Announcements for Sunday, September 3, 2017

Welcome to St. Andrew’s. We are gathered for worship on the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations and acknowledge their stewardship of this land throughout the ages. Please help yourself to Fair Trade coffee, iced tea, or water at the back of the Sanctuary before worship. You may bring it to your seat but we would appreciate it if you would return your cup or glass to the refreshment table before you leave. The washrooms are located downstairs, which are accessible from the stairs off the Narthex (foyer) or the left front side of the Sanctuary.

From Sept. 1 to Oct. 4, Christians from all over the world observe the Season of Creation through prayer, reflection and activities that call us to “live with respect in creation.” As we move from summer to autumn, we prepare ourselves to witness great change. The leaves change from green to vibrant colours, the temperature steadily decreases, the birds fly south. We mirror creation’s rhythm in that we, too, long for change. During the next five weeks, we will be exploring the idea of longing as a spiritual way of engaging our desire for something new and something better.

The Season of Creation comes to a close on Oct. 4, St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day. St. Francis was born in the 12th century and is the patron saint of animals and the environment. This year our annual Blessing of the Animals service will be held on Sun. Oct. 1 at 4 pm in the Sanctuary. Please bring your 4-legged and winged friends to church to be blessed and join everyone for refreshments immediately following the service. If you love animals and would like to assist with the service, please contact Rev. Judith.

At St. Andrew’s United Church all are welcome to share in the bread and the cup at Christ’s table—adults, youth, children, little ones—visitors, newcomers, members of this congregation or not. Please come forward during communion to one of two stations where you will receive The Bread of Life and The Cup of Love. At the stations left front, you will be offered pre-cut bread (or a flax and gluten-free cracker) and grape juice in a small cup. Please eat the bread and then drink the cup before returning to your seat. At the station right front, you will be offered bread from a common loaf and grape juice from a common cup (dip the bread in the cup and then eat the bread before returning to your seat). If you would like to receive communion at your seat, please let an usher know and the servers will bring the bread and the cup to you.

… for providing fabulous music leadership all summer long!

We have been truly blessed this summer to discover that liturgical music can be many things: boisterous, toe-tapping, joyous, different than what we usually associate with “church” music. Nothing can be more life-giving or exciting than letting Spirit (in all its forms) burst forth in new ways. Thanks to Margaret, Andrew, Alex and Derek for helping us to praise God at fourteen Sunday services from June to September.  Our summer music experiment officially comes to an end next Sun. Sept. 10—and the Choir returns from their sabbatical on Sun. Sept. 17.

Sun. Sept. 17 @ 4 pm Taizé-style contemplative candlelight service with beautiful music, Taizé-songs, silences and prayer (Sanctuary)

Fri. Sept. 22 @ 6 pm Free Community Dinner (Friendship Room)

Sun. Sept. 24 @ 4 pm Jazz Vespers with Quintessential Jazz (Sanctuary)
