Acting Against Racism: Strategies for Moving Forward

September 14, 2017, 7:00pm - September 14, 2017, 9:00pm

Have recent national and international events made you feel uncertain or helpless about what you can do to prevent racist or discriminatory behaviour on the North Shore? Racism is not new and neither is Islamophobia, but police-reported hate crimes have recently increased in Canada, leaving many of us wondering how we can avoid being victims or bystanders. This forum aims to connect people in our community and share strategies and actions we can take together and individually. We will be joined by: • Sunera Thobani (asia.ubc.ca/persons/sunera-thobani/) - Keynote Speaker • Handel Kashope Wright (edst.educ.ubc.ca/facultystaff/handel-wright/) - Keynote Speaker • Margaret Gallagher (www.cbc.ca/mediacentre/bio/margaret-gallagher) - Moderator • along with a wonderful panel Full bios are on our website: nsiip.ca/acting-against-racism/ Join us and let’s continue the momentum of resiliency and hope as active participants who see building an inclusive North Shore as a top priority. ______________________________ Tickets are now SOLD OUT. Already got your ticket? We would like to give participants a sense of the audiences’ collective experiences on the North Shore with racism and discrimination and give you a chance to submit questions to the keynote speakers and panelists in advance. Please take our short anonymous survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ActingAgainstRacism *Donations over $20 are eligible to receive a charitable tax receipt. ______________________________ ACCESSIBILITY: ASL-English interpretation will be available at this event. SPACE - Kay Meek Centre is wheelchair accessible with ramps and automated doors at the main entrance, accessibility parking on Mathers, limited seating available for individuals in wheelchairs, and wheelchair accessible bathrooms. There is one set of elevators accessible through the main entrance. Bathrooms are gendered. This is not a scent-reduced space - though attendees are encouraged to reduce/avoid wearing scented products. TRANSPORT - A free community shuttle bus service is available before and after the event for those who do not have access to vehicles. This shuttle will run from the London Drugs at Park Royal North to Kay Meek Centre and return to Park Royal after the event. This shuttle service will be in addition to existing public transit options. Shuttle times and additional transport information will be posted a few days prior to the event. Please note that this event will be attended by members of the community that may include government representatives and law enforcement personnel. If you have any other accessibility needs that would enable you to more fully participate in our event, please get in touch with us at nsiip@nsms.ca or at 604-973-0457 by September 6 and we will do our best to accommodate you. ______________________________ We are grateful to host this event on the traditional, unceded ancestral territories of the the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples as we continue to work towards inclusive communities on the North Shore. ______________________________ A Statement About our Event Logo: The moving logo comes from a painting by an artist who lives and works in North Vancouver: Mino. The original painting is called “A Letter from the Sea” which is part of her series, “Water is Life”. With a strong message about environmental destruction and racism, this series is both personal and emotional and was influenced by current international and national events. From this place of emotion, Mino has also captured hope for the world and for British Columbia. ______________________________ Organizer and Managing Partner: NSIIP & North Shore Multicultural Society Powered by the Power Supporter: Capilano University Energy Generator: Vancity (facebook.com/Vancity/) Venue Partner: Kay Meek Centre Media Sponsor: North Shore News Community Supporters: Back in Motion Mulgrave School SIETAR BC
