Palm Sunday marks Jesus’ “triumphal entry” into Jerusalem in fulfilment of an ancient prophecy: that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The celebration is tinged with tragedy, however, knowing as we do in hindsight, and as Jesus likely knew himself, that he was riding to his death. Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, the part of Lent when Christians retell the final week of Jesus’ life: his arrival in Jerusalem, arrest trial and crucifixion.
